Why do people play mmorpgs?

I played runescape for a week before I realized how pointless it really is. I realized that to make money in game, it takes hundreds of hours. So basically, at every momment you're looking to get more money because you don't have enough. And when you do, you're only buyin a new wand or staff that is better than your last one.
