Should I persue writing as a professional career?

Why not start by getting a "real job" in writing? MANY MANY authors out there, who already knew their true vocation was in writing start out as reporters (online, print, genre-specific online reporting, etc.). Why not start reporting under whatever category/topic you know a lot about - work there for awhile so you can eat/live - and develop your writing career from there?
